SWIM F.A.S.T. Baltimore:

Fearless Aquatic Skills Training

For Adults. For Families. For Generations.

Mission + Overview

SWIM F.A.S.T. Baltimore will break down barriers and allow adults to feel safe and confident in the water. We offer free swim lessons to adults in communities that have often been overlooked in the past for swim education opportunities. For many years, not everyone has had the same access to swim lessons.

Because of this, some communities face higher risks of drowning. We want to impact these unfortunate circumstances in the hope of creating a stronger relationship between adults and water safety.

Our goal is to teach adults the basic skills they need to stay safe in the water and to give them the power and confidence to share these skills with their families and friends.

About Us

For generations, many communities have faced systemic barriers to water safety. In 1953, a young boy tragically drowned while swimming in a river in Baltimore, having been denied access to a nearby segregated pool. This heartbreaking loss sparked an NAACP-led campaign to desegregate Baltimore’s pools, a fight that was eventually won but not before more lives were lost. In 2010, the tragic drowning of six teenagers in Shreveport, La., whose family and community members could not rescue them from the Red River as they cried for help, proves that the consequences of limited access to swim education and the importance of skill training persist.

SWIM F.A.S.T. (Fearless Aquatic Skills Training) Baltimore markets to individuals from communities that have historically faced barriers to water safety and swim education. Based on the applications received, we will carefully review and choose 21 participants who will benefit most from the program. We understand that schedules can be busy, so the program design of 45-minute classes, twice a week for four weeks, is designed to fit the lives of adults while maintaining effectiveness and delivering impact.

The curriculum is condensed and practical, covering core competencies like water introduction, floating, and basic movements. We conclude with certificates and video testimonials for media outreach. What sets us apart? Our unique focus on free lessons for adults and a curriculum that balances effectiveness with demanding schedules will undoubtedly be a game-changer for this community by breaking generational barriers to water safety, increasing confidence in the water, and creating a pathway for lifelong engagement in aquatics.
